The H+S Process
What to Expect
How does this curriculum work?
Harbor and Sprout is a family-style unit study curriculum that allows for each of your students to complete the same lessons in different ways specifically tailored to their needs. Each lesson is divided into 4 levels of learning with detailed guidance as to how you may expand or simplify lessons based on which level of learning best describes your child. Units are delivered as digital downloads to allow you to save, keep, print, and use for your own family or classroom's use for years to come.
What is your curriculum?
Harbor and Sprout is a curriculum that fits the needs of the whole family all at once. Rather than researching, purchasing, and incorporating different curriculum for every subject and every age, we have an all-in-one package for all of your children with all subjects included. We are all about simplifying, and Harbor and Sprout will allow you and your children to truly experience what it is to learn (together!).
Levels of Learning
Inside the handbook, you'll find lesson plans for all subjects broken into four distinct levels of learning:
Explorers are learning to observe the world around them through simple, foundational activities that foster learning, curiosity, and communication.
Investigators are beginning to dig a little deeper through activities that encourage them to ask questions and find answers as they continue to build understanding of fundamental skills.
Adventurers are able to read and write independently. As they continue to learn, they are encouraged to ask questions and engage in activities that lead them to read and research to find answers on their own. They are practicing writing through thoughts in clear, structured sentences and paragraphs.
Discoverers are beginning to take ownership of their education through activities that require them to read, write, and analyze independently. They are practicing writing more formally structured essays and reports and deepening their understanding of the topics they are studying.
Each lesson will be complete with ideas or different instruction sets for how to make material conducive to children at varying stages in their education. In this way, you will assign projects to different ages. For example, for a geography map activity, the Explorer colors the map, the Investigator finds and traces labels, the Adventurer labels the map independently, and the Discoverer does a one-page report on a chosen country. Everyone does the same base activity with versatile guided applications!
Your child may be at a different levels for different subjects or activities. You get to tailor it to exactly what they need and take the freedom to help them learn in a way that makes sense for them!
3-12, see above for description of leveled learning. Maybe these can be combined in some way, or change out a heading for an explanation of the leveled learning system.
What kind of curriculum do you teach?
Harbor and Sprout is an eclectic unit study curriculum, inspired by our favorite aspects of many styles. There are elements that would be considered Waldorf, Montessori, Reggio, or Charlotte Mason, but nothing is especially catered to a set style. It is a free flowing curriculum that allows for fluidity and deeper level learning, adaptable to each child’s learning needs. It can function beautifully as a stand-alone or as a supplement to additional curricula of choice. It’s the best of all worlds.
