Engineering Language Arts & Writing

These lessons are included in our Engineering Unit Study.

Discover language and writing through the lens of engineering in this in-depth, engaging guide by Amber of So Simple a Beginning. This study includes four Language Arts modules, four Writing modules, Spelling and Vocabulary, and additional resources for language exploration:

Language Arts Module 1: "The Bridge Builder"

• Explore the poem "The Bridge Builder"
• Narrate the poem in pictures and/or words
  
• Discover new vocabulary
• Discuss the poem with guided questions
• Practice copywork and handwriting

Language Arts Module 2: Parts of Speech

• Discover the parts of speech and learn the grammar symbol associated with each part
  
• Explore your Parts of Speech poster
• Color the parts of speech
• Practice parts of speech with 3-part cards, featuring symbols and parts of speech
• Study your parts of speech definition cards
• Label parts of speech in sentences with loose part grammar symbols
• Complete a parts of speech challenge

Language Arts Module 3: Rhyming Words

• Learn to hear, identify, and produce words that rhyme
• Read a poem and circle the words that rhyme
• Match rhyming words on your rhyming gears (includes 3 levels of difficulty)
• Complete a rhyming gear for the word "engineer"
• Write a rhyming poem about an engineer

Language Arts Module 4: New Words

• Learn how new words become part of the English language (and about how words are removed)
• Watch a video about lexicography and why it's important to make up new words
• Make new words and practice compounding with your word maker
• Define a new word of your inventing
• Practice reduplication
• Convert words from nouns to verbs, then use the verbs in a sentence
• Write a silly story with your new words

Guided Writing Project: Choose from a selection of possible topics, then follow along with the writing templates and prompts to create a polished piece of writing.

• Module 1: Plan- choose a topic, ask questions, find sources
• Module 2: Research and Outline- answer questions, create your thesis statement, and outline your paper
• Module 3: Write your first draft
• Module 4: Revise, proofread, rewrite, and publish
