Geology Language Arts & Writing


These lessons are included in our Geology Unit Study.

Discover language and writing through the lens of geology in this in-depth, engaging guide by Amber of So Simple a Beginning. This study includes four Language Arts modules, four Writing modules, Spelling and Vocabulary, and additional resources for language exploration:

Language Arts Module 1: The Stonecutter

  • Enjoy the Japanese folktale The Stonecutter
  • Make new hojica and stone cookie recipes while you enjoy your folktale
  • Explore new words you find in the folktale
  • Have a guided conversation about the folktale and record your thoughts
  • Stonecutter Story Play- use loose parts and a story play mat to reenact the story or create your own version with the pieces

Language Arts Module 2: Articles

  • Learn the function of articles and how to use them correctly in a sentence

Language Arts Module 3: Idioms

  • Learn what an idiom is and discover the meanings of some common idioms
  • Watch a catchy music video about idioms
  • Use Geology Idiom Cards to practice with idioms, use them in a sentence, and match idioms and their meanings
  • Study your geology idioms poster
  • Investigate idioms from a list and discover its meaning
  • Play idiom/meanings match

Language Arts Module 4: Haiku

  • Learn the purpose and structure of haiku and write your own
  • Watch a video of Japanese haiku and enjoy poems of nature
  • Paint a haiku
  • Practice creating your own haiku using geology-themed magnetic word tiles
  • Make a list of interesting words
  • Write a haiku of your own

Guided Writing Project: Write a geology research paper! Choose from a selection of possible topics, then follow along with the writing templates and prompts to create a polished piece of writing.

  • Module 1: Plan- choose a topic, ask questions, and find sources
  • Module 2: Research- answer questions, write your thesis statement, and outline your paper 
  • Module 3: Write your first draft
  • Module 4: Revise, proofread, rewrite, and publish
