Welcome to the Harbor + Sprout Forestry Patchwork Study, originally released in November 2021 and updated in October 2025. This unit study features 4 weeks of lesson plans and materials covering all 9 of our core subjects plus a playful supplemental section of thematic activities. This unit study is meant for use by children ages 3-12.

Science
Lesson 1: What is Forestry? In this lesson, you will explore how trees function within forests. You’ll identify the main parts of a tree and its trunk, investigate how trees support ecosystems, and discover how foresters study and protect forests.
Lesson 2: What is a Tree Life Cycle? In this lesson, you will discover how trees grow and reproduce, compare gymnosperms and angiosperms, examine cones and seeds, and study tree rings to reveal a tree’s growth and history.
Lesson 3: How do Trees Live & Grow? In this lesson, you will explore how trees live and thrive. You’ll identify the parts of a leaf, investigate photosynthesis and transpiration, and model how water and nutrients move through leaves to support a tree’s growth.
Lesson 4: What Kinds of Forests Are There? In this lesson, you will investigate the world’s different forest biomes. You’ll identify forest layers, compare tropical, temperate, and boreal forests, and learn how plants and animals adapt to thrive in these diverse ecosystems.
Nature Study
Lesson 1: What is a Conifer? In this lesson, you will explore the differences between coniferous and deciduous trees. You’ll identify needles, scales, and cones, observe evergreens, and investigate how tree types adapt to their environments.
Lesson 2: Needles- In this lesson, you will study conifer needles and learn how their shapes and attachments help identify different trees. You’ll compare species, observe needle patterns, and create nature-inspired art.
Lesson 3: Cones- In this lesson, you will explore the fascinating world of conifer cones. You’ll learn to identify cone types, observe their features, and create a nature-inspired bird feeder craft.
Lesson 4: Field Guide to Conifers- In this lesson, you will become a young naturalist by creating your own field guide. You’ll observe, measure, draw, and describe local conifers using real scientific methods.
Language Arts
Lesson 1: Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening- In this lesson, you’ll explore Robert Frost’s poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” Discover its mood, meaning, and imagery through poetry analysis, writing, art, and creative woodland activities.
Lesson 2: Adjectives- In this lesson, you’ll discover adjectives in poetry and nature. Learn to identify, compare, and use descriptive words to make writing more vivid, imaginative, and expressive.
Lesson 3: Fables- In this lesson, you’ll learn about fables, their structure, morals, and timeless lessons. Study Aesop’s tales, then craft your own fable using creativity, storytelling dice, and forest-themed puppets.
Lesson 4: Language Families- In this lesson, you’ll investigate how languages are connected through families. Discover linguistic roots, trace English’s origins, and compare world languages using trees, leaves, and interactive exploration.
Writing
Lesson 1: Plan- In this lesson, you’ll plan your research project by choosing a forest-related topic, asking meaningful questions, and selecting reliable sources to guide your exploration and writing process.
Lesson 2: Research, Statement, and Outline- In this lesson, you’ll develop your research by organizing information, forming a thesis statement, and outlining your writing. Strengthen your argument using clear structure and strong supporting evidence.
Lesson 3: Write- In this lesson, you’ll write your first draft by transforming your outline and research into a complete piece. Focus on expressing ideas clearly before refining your writing later.
Lesson 4: Revise- In this lesson, you’ll revise your writing by editing for clarity and structure, proofreading for accuracy, and preparing your polished final draft.
History
Lesson 1: Forest Fires- In this lesson, you’ll learn about wildfires: their causes, effects, and prevention. Explore historical fires, conduct hands-on fire safety experiments, and discover ways to help prevent wildfires today.
Lesson 2: Historical Figures- In this lesson, you’ll discover historical foresters Dietrich Brandis and Gifford Pinchot. Explore their contributions to conservation, discover how to protect nature, and practice tree identification outdoors.
Lesson 3: Ancient Forests- In this lesson, you’ll explore ancient forests around the world and learn about deforestation and ways to protect Earth’s oldest ecosystems.
Lesson 4: American Folklore- In this lesson, you’ll discover American folklore heroes Paul Bunyan and Johnny Appleseed. Uncover their legendary stories, explore their connection to forests, and create your own knapsack for adventure.
Geography
Lesson 1: O Canada!- In this lesson, you’ll discover Canada: its symbols, anthem, wildlife, and forests. Explore fun facts, color the flag, and test your knowledge with Canadian trivia cards.
Lesson 2: Maps- In this lesson, you’ll investigate maps of Canada and the world, identify provinces and territories, label regions, and explore cultural geography through fun, hands-on mapping and discovery activities.
Lesson 3: Indigenous Peoples of Canada- In this lesson, you’ll discover the Inuit people of Canada, explore their traditional culture, and build a sugar-cube igloo while learning about Arctic life and Indigenous traditions.
Lesson 4: The Boreal Forest- In this lesson, you’ll explore Canada’s Boreal Forest, learn about its trees, animals, and unique ecosystem, and explore how this vast biome supports life through creative art and observation.
Music
Lesson 1: Natural Forest Biuacoustics- In this lesson, you will study and analyze the sounds of the forest to understand the principles and applications of natural bioacoustics.You will discover how each forest has a unique soundscape. You will learn about the melody of birdsong and you will see how scientists use bioacoustics.
Lesson 2: Wagner's Forest Murmurs- In this lesson, you will dive into the world of Wagner’s “Forest Murmurs”. You will discover its role in “Siegfried” and you will learn how Wagner crafted a rich soundscape of nature. Finally, you will examine the musical techniques he used to create this immersive atmosphere.
Lesson 3: The Forest in Opera- In this lesson, you will explore the role of the forest in opera, how it serves as a realm of magic and transformation, or a place of danger and isolation. Finally, you will see how composers use the forest as a reflection of human emotion.
Lesson 4: Wood and Music- In this chapter, you will discover how different types of wood shape the sound and construction of musical instruments. You will explore the art of crafting instruments from wood and learn about the challenges of deforestation and sustainability.
Art
Lesson 1: Fire Art- In this lesson, you’ll explore the connection between fire and art, study color theory through forest fire imagery, and create expressive fire-inspired artwork using painting and blowing techniques.
Lesson 2: Leaf Rubbings- In this lesson, you’ll observe and create leaf rubbings, study the parts of a leaf, and analyze your artwork to understand patterns, textures, and natural design in plant life.
Lesson 3: Warm and Cool Colors- In this lesson, you’ll explore warm and cool colors found in nature, learn how color affects mood and emotion, and create your own day-and-night forest artwork using color theory.
Lesson 4: Nature Art- In this lesson, you’ll discover nature-inspired art through Andy Goldsworthy’s work and learn how to use natural materials like rocks, leaves, and shadows to create expressive, eco-based masterpieces.
Math
Lesson 1: Patterns- In this lesson, you’ll learn to recognize, describe, and create patterns using natural objects or cutouts, exploring different pattern types like AB, AAB, ABB, ABC, and AABB.
Lesson 2: Forest Numbers to 20- In this lesson, you’ll discover how to count, write, and recognize numbers up to 20, explore number words, practice simple addition, and understand early algebra through fun forest-themed activities.
Lesson 3: The Multiplication Table- In this lesson, you’ll build and understand multiplication tables, identify patterns in fact families, and strengthen your math skills through interactive, nature-themed activities like the “Tree Planting” multiplication game.
Lesson 4: Addition and Subtraction, Forest Game- In this lesson, you’ll practice adding and subtracting using nature-inspired manipulatives and strengthen logical thinking by identifying and coloring leaves based on positional and color clues.
